A History of Amherst Baptist Church

A History of Amherst Baptist Church

Amherst Baptist Church is the Church first founede by Adoniram Judson on February 4,1827.It also the second church established in Myanmar. While his mission inYangon and Upper Inwa(Ava)
he was arrested for twenty - one months in Inwa Prison and Aungpilae Prison, because of English -
Myanmar War(1).
After he was from arrest, he left the regions ruled by Myanmar King as he had been faced with
trouble, fear and hardship. Deciding to start his mission in the areas ruled by the English colony, he
chose Kyaikkhami Township as his mission station.
Adoniram Judson and his wife, Ann Judson arrived at Kyaikkhami township on July 2, 1826. As
an interpreter, he had to travel to Inwa for English Myanmar Agreement for trade. At this time, together with Mg Ing, a believer, Mrs.Judson and who was left in Kyaikkhami, opened a school for children and Mg Ing took in charge of the school. Here, she and the believers worshiped together on Sunday.

While carrying on her missionary, she looked after her daughter Mariea who was sick and poor in health. She became weak due to lack of nutrition and hardship during the past two years. Captain Fan Wike managed to look after Mariea with the help of the wife of a British  officer and also cured Mrs. Judson. However her health became worse. Finally, she passed away on the 24 of October, 1826.
Dr. Judson returned to Kyaikkhami on January 21, 1827 and to be welcomed by the grave of his beloved wife, buried near the seashore. In spite  of his sadness, he sewed a seed for his mission on February 4, 1827 in Kyaikkhami. Therefore, Amherst Baptist Church is the church built on tears of the Judson. When riem  passed, there are a few believers in this historic Church. By the day when Judson arrived in Myanmar 200 years, we have the vision, like our ancestors to ancestors our mission.
